Lord Chesterfield's Letter to his Son

It has been said that Lord Chesterfield did not intend on these letter to his son to be released to the public, and I can most definitely see why. His letters exposed the fact that he was somewhat of his poser in life before he actually reached his wealth and fame. In letter 23, he simply told his son that although he is not in the upperclass, if he looked at acted like it, people would think he was, and treat him better than others. In letter 24 he seems to be talking down on a certain group of people. Chesterfield explained to his son that if he is interacting with others he might as well got something out of it in return, whether it be education, or something materialistic. Chesterfield wants nothing but success for his son and makes sure he understands that he must find a balance between business and fun. He seems like a very supportive father that wants the best for his son, but sometimes I feel as though his advice is a bit elementary and he is talking to his son like he is completely clueless. Although it is quite possible that Chesterfield's son is actually clueless and he is extremely worried for his sons well being in the future. Either way, it is extremely interesting to read these letters, especially the one that was written 272 years ago on this day. It really puts into perspective how much the world has changed, but also shows that almost 300 years later, some people are still struggling with similar situations.
